The Love of God
Orig. Words: Words: Frederick M. Lehman (1917). Alt. Words: Jesse Rey Quesada.
The love of God, more rich and vast
Than tongue or pen could ever say;
It issues from th’eternal past,
Secures us through our final day.
God’s gracious plan for guilty man –
He gave His Son to win.
His erring child He reconciled,
And pardoned from his sin.
O love of God, by Christ assured!
By His own blood, made strong.
While He abides, we shall not fear,
For we to Him belong.
Could we with ink the ocean fill,
And were the skies of parchment made,
Were every stalk on earth a quill,
And every man a scribe by trade,
To write the love of God above,
Would drain the ocean dry.
Nor could the scroll contain the whole,
Though stretched from sky to sky.
O love of God, how rich and pure!
How measureless and strong!
It shall forevermore endure
The saints’ and angels’ song.
When years of time shall pass away,
And earthly thrones and kingdoms cease,
When Christ calls forth that final day,
And grants His people endless peace.
God’s love so sure, shall still endure,
All measureless and strong;
“Redeeming grace to Adam’s race” —
The saints’ and angels’ song.
O love of God, forever sure!
How measureless and strong!
Held by His hand, we’ll dwell secure
For endless years prolonged.
